Itinerary
DAY 1: ROAD JOURNEY FROM CUSCO TO PUNO, EXPLORING THE ROUTE OF THE SUN
Early in the morning, our representative will pick you up at your hotel in Cusco and transfer you to the bus terminal to board the tourist bus to Puno. Today’s journey along the Ruta del Sol (Route of the Sun) offers the opportunity to discover remarkable Inca and colonial sites while traveling through the breathtaking Andean landscapes between Cusco and Puno.
More than just a transfer, this full-day trip is a fascinating combination of history, culture, and nature. Sit back and relax on board a modern, comfortable bus while knowledgeable local guides bring each destination to life with stories and insights you won’t find in any guidebook.
The first stop is the charming town of Andahuaylillas, home to the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle, often called the “Sistine Chapel of America.” Built by the Jesuits in the 16th century atop a sacred Inca site, this small adobe church surprises visitors with its magnificent baroque interior filled with gold leaf, murals, and ornate paintings.
Next, we visit Raqchi, an important archaeological site recognized as one of the “Best Tourism Villages.” Here lies the impressive Temple of Wiracocha, built in honor of the invisible supreme deity of the Andean people. The structure’s 15-meter-high walls and surrounding ruins make it one of the most monumental surviving Inca constructions.
Enjoy a buffet lunch at a traditional restaurant in Sicuani, offering Andean specialties such as beef, chicken, and trout, with a variety of side dishes, salads, desserts, and herbal teas. The restaurant features large panoramic windows with views of the surrounding Andean mountains.
We then continue to La Raya Pass, the natural boundary between the Cusco and Puno regions. This high-altitude point offers spectacular views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks and marks the highest point of the journey.
The final visit is to the town of Pucará, once the first major settlement in the northern Lake Titicaca basin during the Late Formative Period (500 BC–200 AD). The Pucará Museum showcases striking monolithic sculptures and multi-colored ceramics representing animals, humans, and geometric forms, offering valuable insight into one of the earliest Andean civilizations.
Arrival in Puno is around 5:30 p.m. at the bus terminal located near the shores of Lake Titicaca. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and overnight at Royal Inn Hotel. (B, L)
Note: It is required to bring cash for the entrance fees at some of the stops, as these are paid directly to the local communities who preserve and maintain the attractions. We also recommend bringing some extra money in case you wish to buy snacks or souvenirs.
DAY 2: LAKE TITICACA – UROS FLOATING ISLANDS AND TAQUILE ISLAND
At the start of the day, you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the port to begin your unforgettable journey across Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, located at an altitude of over 3,800 meters (12,500 feet). This vast body of deep-blue water holds great cultural and spiritual significance for the Andean people, who consider it the birthplace of the Inca civilization. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and dotted with islands rich in tradition, Lake Titicaca is a true natural and cultural treasure.
You will board a shared fiber boat (capacity: 20 passengers), accompanied at all times by your private cultural and birding guide, who will enrich your experience with fascinating insights into the local traditions, wildlife, and ecosystems of the lake. For bird enthusiasts, Lake Titicaca is a paradise, home to a wide variety of high-Andean and aquatic bird species. Among those commonly seen are the Andean coot, puna teal, yellow-billed pintail, white-tufted grebe, Andean gull, Andean lapwing, and the graceful silvery grebe. With some luck, you may also spot the endemic Titicaca flightless grebe, one of the lake’s most emblematic and threatened species.
The first stop will be the famous Uros Floating Islands, an extraordinary archipelago of more than 80 man-made islands constructed entirely from totora reeds that grow in the shallows of the lake. Here, the Uros people -descendants of one of the region’s oldest cultures- maintain a unique way of life, living on floating platforms and navigating the waters in traditional reed boats. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about their ingenious construction techniques, observe their daily activities, and appreciate the harmony in which they live with nature. While exploring, keep an eye out for reed-nesting birds such as the wren-like rushbird, yellow-winged blackbird, and various species of ibis and herons that inhabit the wetlands.
The journey continues to Taquile Island, renowned for its breathtaking views of the lake and its masterful textile art, recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The islanders have preserved their traditional lifestyle and dress, and their weaving -rich in symbolic patterns- reflects social and cultural aspects of community life. As you walk along the island’s scenic trails, you might also encounter Andean tinamous, puna ibises, or carunculated caracaras soaring overhead, adding to the richness of this natural and cultural experience.
In the afternoon, return by boat to the city of Puno, arriving around 5:00 p.m., and transfer to your hotel for a well-deserved rest. Overnight at Royal Inn Hotel. (B, L)
DAY 3: SILLUSTANI BURIAL TOWERS – TRANSFER TO JULIACA AIRPORT
After breakfast, your private guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel to begin your journey toward the northern side of Puno, where you will visit the impressive archaeological site of Sillustani. Perched on the shores of Lake Umayo, this pre-Inca cemetery is famous for its chullpas, ancient cylindrical stone burial towers built by the Colla people to honor their noble ancestors long before the rise of the Inca Empire. Some of these towers reach up to 12 meters (40 feet) in height and display remarkable stonework and engineering skills.
The site offers a spectacular setting surrounded by rolling hills and the serene blue waters of the lake, which create one of the most peaceful and scenic spots in the entire Altiplano. Besides its archaeological significance, Sillustani is also an excellent place for birdwatching. The wetlands around Lake Umayo are home to a rich diversity of bird species, making it a rewarding stop for nature lovers. Here, you might spot black-faced ibis, puna hawks, Andean flickers, mountain caracaras, Andean geese, and giant coots along the shore. With some patience, you may also observe the elegant black-necked stilt or the cinereous harrier gliding over the highland grasses.
After exploring the site and enjoying the panoramic views, you will continue your drive to Juliaca Airport, located about an hour away. Depending on your travel plans, you will board your flight to Lima, Arequipa, or another Peruvian destination.
This day’s services are operated on a private basis, ensuring flexibility and personalized attention throughout your journey. (B)
