Nestled in northern Ecuador’s Pichincha Province, just northwest of the capital, Quito, the Chocó Biosphere Reserve spans an extraordinary altitudinal range—from 360 to 4,480 meters above sea level. Together with the Amazon and Galápagos regions, the Chocó helps position Ecuador as a global biodiversity hotspot, thanks to its remarkable endemism and species richness. This region encompasses two critical ecoregions: the humid lowland forests of the Chocó–Darien, which stretch from Panama to western Ecuador, and the Northern Andean Montane Forests. The area supports astonishing biological diversity, including roughly 270 mammal species (such as the endangered spectacled bear), over 200 reptile species, 130 amphibians, and more than 350 bird species.

Our Chocó Cloud Forest Tour focuses on prime birding areas northwest of Quito, within a biogeographic zone known for its wealth of endemic birds and species found only in adjacent parts of Colombia. The itinerary includes stays at comfortable, strategically located lodges such as Piripe Lodge, Cielo Verde, Kapari Lodge, and Sacha Tamia. These lodges offer easy access to top birding hotspots like the Tandayapa and Mindo valleys, Mashpi Amaguza, Mashpi Wuasi, Fruttitour, Paz de las Aves, the Manduriacu River, and the lower Silanche area—each offering a mosaic of distinct habitats to explore.

The tour begins in the high-altitude elfin forests of the temperate zone and gradually descends through lush subtropical cloud forests to the rich tropical foothills and lowlands. This altitudinal journey provides exceptional chances to observe a wide range of birdlife, from widespread Neotropical species to highly localized endemics. Highlights include the pursuit of regional icons such as the Andean Cock-of-the-rock, various antpittas, colorful tanagers, manakins, toucans, and hummingbirds. We’ll also keep an eye out for rarities like the Black Solitaire, Chocó Vireo, and Indigo Flowerpiercer.
