Chile - King Penguins, Pumas & Torres del Paine Wilderness

Your journey begins in Santiago, where you are warmly welcomed into Chile’s dynamic capital. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred privately to Windham Aeropuerto Santiago.

The rest of the day is at leisure to rest, reset, and prepare for the incredible wildlife and landscapes ahead. In the evening, you will gather for a briefing followed by a welcome dinner.

No activities are planned for this day. However, if your flight arrives early (around 8:00–9:00 am), optional experiences can be arranged at an additional cost, such as a city tour or a birding excursion to Embalse El Yeso.

Birding at Embalse El Yeso offers excellent opportunities to observe unique Andean species, including the Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, Andean Condor, and various ground-tyrants and miners, all set against a spectacular high-altitude landscape. (D)

Transfer to the airport for an early flight south to Punta Arenas (approximately 3 hours), where Patagonia begins to reveal its raw and untamed character.

Upon arrival, we drive about 40 km to Fuerte Bulnes, perched above the legendary Strait of Magellan. Along the way, we make several stops to observe the surrounding landscapes and wildlife, with opportunities to spot species such as whales, albatrosses, crested and chimango caracaras, and the Southern Giant Petrel.

We then arrive at historic Puerto Bulnes, beautifully situated on a windswept headland overlooking the strait. Founded in 1843, this settlement marked Chile’s first permanent presence in the Magellan region and represents a key chapter in the human history of southern Patagonia. As we explore the reconstructed fort -featuring the chapel, barracks, and defensive structures- we gain a vivid understanding of the isolation, harsh climate, and resilience required to survive in this remote frontier.

The surrounding coastal forest and shrubland habitats offer excellent opportunities for birdwatching and natural history interpretation. During a guided walk along the trails, we will focus on Patagonian ecosystems and their adaptations to wind and cold conditions. Species may include the Thorn-tailed Rayadito, Magellanic Woodpecker, Austral Thrush, and other characteristic forest and coastal birds. The dramatic scenery, shaped by glacial and marine forces, provides an exceptional setting to understand the ecological dynamics of the region.

In the afternoon, we return to Punta Arenas, arriving by the end of the day. The wind, the ever-changing light, and the vastness of the landscape create a powerful first connection with Patagonia. This is where the region begins to reveal its secrets, encounters with species such as the Chilean Flicker and the Rufous-tailed Plantcutter, set the tone for the days ahead. Overnight at Patagonia Hotel or similar. (B, L, D)

After an early breakfast, we depart very early to the ferry terminal to begin our journey to Tierra del Fuego, crossing the legendary Strait of Magellan.

We take the ferry from Punta Arenas to Porvenir (approximately 2–3 hours), followed by a scenic drive of about 115 km (1.5–2 hours) across the Patagonian steppe to reach Reserva Natural Pingüino Rey.

Today is one of the true highlights of the journey. Here, in the remote and windswept landscapes of Bahía Inútil, we encounter the only inland colony of King Penguins in the world. Observing these elegant birds -far from their typical subantarctic range- standing quietly in the vast Patagonian steppe is a truly unique experience.

Our visit is carefully organized in small groups, with scheduled entry times and accompanied by specialized park rangers. During a guided visit of approximately one hour, we will walk along designated trails and observe the colony from a distance of about 40 meters, using strategically placed blinds that allow for excellent photography and observation while ensuring minimal disturbance.

This protected area, established in 2011, plays a vital role in conserving the natural and cultural heritage of the region. Beyond the penguins, we will learn about the biodiversity of Tierra del Fuego and the history of this remote land, all within a setting that invites quiet contemplation and connection with nature.

After our visit, we begin the return journey to Porvenir to take the ferry back to Punta Arenas, making stops along the way to observe birds, wildlife, and the striking Patagonian landscapes. Overnight at Patagonia Hotel or similar. (B, L, D)

Today we journey toward Torres del Paine National Park, uncovering some of Patagonia’s most captivating hidden gems along the way.

Our first stop is the remarkable Cueva del Milodón Natural Monument, where vast caves and rock formations reveal a story spanning over 20,000 years. This extraordinary site brings Patagonia’s past to life -from extinct megafauna to the earliest human presence- set within a dramatic and windswept landscape.

We then continue to an exclusive private reserve, Pedestre, a true off-the-beaten-path experience. Here, striking ancient conglomerate formations rise from the landscape, creating a surreal and photogenic setting. This secluded location is perfect for enjoying Patagonia in complete tranquility, while offering excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.

Surrounded by beautiful Patagonian beech forest -home to lenga trees (Nothofagus pumilio)- we keep an eye out for characteristic birdlife such as the Fire-eyed Diucon, Magellanic Woodpecker, Rufous-collared Sparrow, and Long-tailed Meadowlark.

After a scenic stop for lunch in Puerto Natales, we continue driving along Bahía del Bote toward Cerro Castillo, near the Argentine border. En route, we pause to take in the vast landscapes and spot local wildlife, as the iconic Paine massif slowly reveals itself on the horizon. Overnight at Ovejero Patagonico Hotel. (B, L, D)

An early start sets the tone for one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences in the world. At 4:15 a.m., we depart for the Sarmiento area, heading toward Laguna Amarga, widely regarded as the best place to encounter wild pumas in Torres del Paine National Park.

Upon arrival, we meet our expert local tracker, whose deep knowledge of the terrain and puma behavior greatly enhances our chances of success. From here, we begin a full-day tracking experience across the Patagonian steppe, where every ridge and valley holds the promise of an unforgettable sighting.

As the sun rises, pumas become active, often beginning their hunt. Guanacos -their primary prey- are frequently seen in the area, offering the possibility of witnessing raw, unscripted wildlife interactions. Along the way, we also keep an eye out for birdlife such as seedsnipes, Black-chinned Siskins, and the impressive Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle.

The landscapes here reveal a different perspective of Torres del Paine vast, open, and beautifully austere- providing a dramatic backdrop to the experience. Observing a puma moving freely through this wild terrain is more than a sighting; it is a powerful and deeply moving connection with nature.

This full-day excursion includes a box lunch enjoyed in the field, allowing us to maximize our time immersed in this extraordinary environment. Overnight at Ovejero Patagonico Hotel. (B, BL, D)

Today we fully immerse ourselves in the breathtaking landscapes of Torres del Paine National Park, one of the most iconic national parks on Earth. Entering its vast wilderness, we dedicate the day to exploring and understanding the remarkable geology that has shaped its dramatic granite towers, rugged peaks, and sweeping valleys.

As we journey through the park, we make scenic stops to admire its ever-changing vistas, each turn revealing a new natural masterpiece. From the icy shores of Lake Grey, where we enjoy a gentle one-hour walk to take in views of the glacier, to expansive open landscapes framed by the Southern Andes, the day is rich in both beauty and discovery.

Wildlife is ever-present. We keep watch for species such as the Austral Owl and Austral Parakeet, while overhead, majestic Andean Condors glide effortlessly on thermal currents. With a bit of luck, we may even encounter the elusive South Andean deer (huemul), one of Patagonia’s most iconic and endangered mammals.

A scenic lunch is enjoyed along the way, surrounded by some of the most extraordinary landscapes in South America.

In the late afternoon, we continue toward the Río Serrano area, known for its pristine rivers and renowned fishing opportunities. This tranquil setting will be our base, offering a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and awe-inspiring scenery. Overnight at Hotel del Paine Lodge. (B, L, D)

Our final morning in Torres del Paine National Park offers one last opportunity to take in its extraordinary landscapes, as the ever-changing Patagonian light creates perfect conditions for photography and quiet reflection.

We visit the stunning Lake Pehoé and its surroundings, one of the park’s most photogenic locations. Here, turquoise waters meet dramatic mountain backdrops, creating an unforgettable setting for both landscape and wildlife enthusiasts. The area is rich in birdlife, with species such as the Rufous-tailed Plantcutter, Patagonian Sierra Finch, Crested Duck, and Upland Goose frequently seen. Throughout the day, we continue to enjoy the region’s diverse flora, fauna, and sweeping scenery, with a scenic lunch along the way.

Later, we begin our journey back toward the coast, gradually leaving behind the wild heart of Patagonia as we make our way to Puerto Natales. This charming coastal town welcomes us with its relaxed atmosphere, scenic waterfront, and excellent local restaurants. In the afternoon, there is time to stroll along the picturesque shoreline, where elegant Black-necked Swan are often seen gliding across the water. Surrounded by mountains and sea, Puerto Natales offers a perfect setting to unwind and reflect on the journey.

In the evening, we gather to enjoy a delicious local meal, an ideal way to celebrate the unforgettable experiences and landscapes of Patagonia. Overnight at Martin Gusinde Lodge. (B, L, D)

Today we explore Patagonia from a different perspective – by water.

After breakfast, we head to the dock to begin a scenic navigation through the fjords, where dramatic landscapes unfold with pristine waterways, cascading waterfalls, and striking ice formations. This unforgettable journey takes us deep into remote wilderness, offering a unique vantage point of Patagonia’s raw beauty.

Our navigation leads us to the impressive Balmaceda Glacier and Serrano Glacier, where towering ice walls and untouched surroundings create a truly awe-inspiring setting. The excursion lasts approximately 4 to 5 hours, allowing ample time to take in the scenery and observe wildlife along the way.

During the day, we visit a traditional Patagonian estancia, where we enjoy the landscapes and a classic Patagonian barbecue. With some luck, we may encounter wildlife such as Magellanic penguin and even Sei whale.

There will also be a short walk through a native forest, offering another opportunity to spot bird species we may have missed earlier in the journey.

This experience is a fitting grand finale—quiet, powerful, and deeply moving—bringing us closer to the wild and frozen heart of Patagonia. Overnight at Martin Gusinde Lodge. (B, L, D)

Our unforgettable journey through Patagonia comes to an end today. After breakfast, we transfer to the airport in Puerto Natales for our flight to Santiago. This domestic flight is scheduled to connect smoothly with your international departure.

We recommend booking your onward international flight from Santiago (SCL) in the late afternoon or evening, allowing ample time for your connection upon arrival.

As you begin your journey home, you take with you the essence of Patagonia, its vast landscapes, extraordinary wildlife, and truly unforgettable experiences. (B)
