Information

A 12 day trip to one of the greatest Brazilian destinations, an area rich in endemic bird species that should be in the schedule of any South American bird lover.

It combines the great avifauna of one of the most wonderful National Parks in Brazil and the quest for some of the rarest bird species in the lowlands of one of the most endangered habitats in the planet, the enigmatic Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

Some of the target species will be Hooded Berryeater, Black-hooded Antwren, Rio de Janeiro Antbird, Frilled Coquette, Green-headed, Gilt-edged, and Rufous-headed Tanager just to mention a few.


Itinerary


One of the most endangered set of bird species on South America and its unique habitat will be our quest during our visit to a country with a great culture and cuisine. Two weeks enjoying the wonders of the most restricted avifauna in Brazil.

Day 1

Transfer in from international flight in Rio the Janeiro airport, and transfer driving to Teresopolis to a hotel close to Serra dos Orgáos National Park where jewels like the Gray-winged Cotinga and Swallow-tailed Cotinga will be some of target species.

Day 2

Birding a dry forest Northeast of Teresopolis holding a group of some of the most endangered species in Brazil among them Three-toed Jacamar and Rio de Janeiro Antbird. Night in Teresopolis.

Day 3

Full morning birding the Serra dos Orgáos National Park and in the afternoon transfer to the Itatiaia National Park. Overnight Hotel do Ype. Itatiaia NP.

Day 4

Full day in Itatiaia NP. The Itatiaia National Park protects different elevation habitats ranging from tall hilly humid forest grading up to grassland dominated fields just above the tree line, the list species from Itatiaia National Park is so extensive that metion just a few will take plenty space:

Black Jacobin, Black-brested Plovercrest, Mantled Hawk, Black-billed Scythebill, White-bearded Antshrike, Mouse-colored Tapaculo, Black-and-gold Cotinga, Brassy-breasted Tanager, Uniform Finch, Bay-chested Warbling-Finch, Red-rumped Warbling-finch,

Day 5

Full day in Itatiaia NP visiting the Agulhas Negras Highlands inside the Park.

Day 6

Full day in Itatiaia NP.

Day 7

Early morning birding in the Itatiaia NP and in the afternoon birding transfer to Pereque. Night in Pereque Hotel.

Day 8

Early morning birding the area close to Pereque and in the afternoon birding transfer to Ubatuba. Night in Ubatuba. After an early morning breakfast we will be visiting a near by remnant of forest in the sick of Band-tailed Hornero, the ultra local Black-hooded Antwren, Planalto Tyrannulet, Buff-throated Purpletuft and Brazilian Tanager.

Day 9

Full day birding the Ubatuba area. Night in Ubatuba. Before returning to Rio de Janeiro we will visit some private reserves and protected forests securing the habitat of species such us:

Tawny-browed Owl, Least Pygmy-Owl, Saw-billed Hermit, Spot-backed Antshrike, Tufted Antshrike, Star-throated Antwren, Salvatori's Antwren, Unicolored Antwren, Scaled Antbird, Spotted Bamboowren, Slaty Bristlefront, Fork-tailed Tody-Tyrant, Sao PauloTyrannulet among many others

Day 10

Full day the Ubatuba area. Night in Ubatuba.

Day 11

Early morning in Ubatuba area and pm transfer back to Rio de Janeiro.

Day 12

Transfer to International flights.
